How many times it happened that you misplaced the key after locking the door, how absurd it feels when you walk into a room and completely slip what you were about to do there or how embarrassing it feels when you shake hand with an acquaintance and can’t remember his name. And above all as a student how worse the situation gets when you get stuck at the middle of a theorem in an examination hall, which you had practiced five times a day before. Brain, It’s all in the brain only and went nowhere, all the information and data you have captured through your five senses (Eyes, Nose, Ears, Touch and Taste) always remained in your brain memory and was also present even at the examination room, but the problem arises when you were not able to recall and remember that piece of information when it was required.
Now here comes the question why I can’t recall it? And can I also have a good memory?
To your surprise, yes. Not only you every other person can have strong and a good memory in fact it’s a complete myth that ‘different people have different memory capacity’, Which is absurd, we all have a same hardware named ‘Brain’ and almost of same size and mass, the differences lies in utilization of brain not in the capacity of it, people who utilize most of the capacity of their brain claim to have a strong memory while there are people who are not able to utilise the capacity of it and accept the myth that their brain capacity is not sharp as others. We all have a brain of same capacity, all we need is to guide and train it precisely to utilise it’s maximum potential. Before I proceed here is the small test for you, read the following list of words.
If I ask you to remember all the words that to in the same sequence how much time it will take? You can take a self-test, start a stopwatch and try to remember the list in 5 minutes and then try to recall it.
Done? Now I’m sure that most of you would have got confused in the middle of the list where words get juggled in your brain and this whole thing seemed none other than a brain twister. But trust me you will get shocked to recognize that how easy it is to memorize after applying the proper memory techniques.
Here is the technique to memorize such sort of information and boost your memory skills.
Before we start lets once look how information in our brain is processed in a nutshell. The 3 R’s (REGISTRATION, RETENTION, RECOLLECTION) working of brain consists these three steps mainly. First our brain registers the information and memories within it collected via all five senses (Eyes, Nose, Touch, Taste and smell) like a raw data which exists there for a very short time and this whole process is named as REGISTRATION. Now RETENTION is just a process to store that raw data for a long very duration of time which is available there for very short interval so that it can be remembered further, And this same ability to recall and remember that piece of information when it is required is known as RECOLLECTION. It’s almost same as working of a computer, input of data, storage and output.
That’s enough sort of knowledge, let’s just read this passage and while reading try to visualise it.
An ant is holding a mobile. With the mobile phone, it makes a call to an elephant. The Elephant is holding a paintbrush. With the brush, he is painting a poster. This poster is pasted on a tree. On top of the tree is a Spiderman from whose hands a rainbow is coming out instead of web. Rainbow is going into a mug, from which a lot of Biscuits are coming out and falling into the lake. In lake there is dragon, from whose mouth clouds are coming out. On the cloud there is an umbrella on which shoe is placed.
Close your eyes and try to repeat it mentally.
Now without looking back at the story, try to answer these following questions.
- What was the ant holding __________?
- Whom is it calling ___________ ?
- What is the elephant holding __________ ?
- What is the elephant painting with the brush ___________?
- The poster is pasted on what? ___________ ?
- What is there on there on the tree ___________?
- What is coming out of his hands__________?
- The rainbow is falling into what? ___________ ?
- What is coming out of mug ___________?
- Where are the biscuits falling ___________ ?
- What is in the Lake ____________?
- What is coming out of dragon’s mouth? __________ ?
- What is coming out from the cloud ____________?
- What is there on the top of the Umbrella_________?
Are you able to answer all the questions correctly? Awesome! Isn’t it? If you try to recall the words written in bold letter now you can do it in same sequence. And the most amazing part it’s the same list that I gave you earlier to memorize it which you couldn’t do even in 5 minutes.
How amazing is this, what you were unable to do in 5 minutes, you have now done it in few minutes.
Why and how you are able to do this now? And how can you adopt it to enhance your memory.
The only answer is because of Laws of memory, it’s only the Laws of memory that made you able to remember such complicated sequence of list. The three basic laws of memory can be summarised as A.I.R. Law of Association Law of Imagination Law of Ridiculous thinking
- Law of Association
Law of association tells that any information which gets registered in our brain is only able to register because of some prior association already present in the brain to link with it. For example you are able to read this Blog in English because you know the alphabets and grammars of this language, likewise you learn and register any new thing in your brain by connecting it with something you already know and this makes things easier to learn. When I told you to remember the list at first you were unable to do it because you didn’t formed associations of that list, you were remembering at as a raw data but when you formed associations like “The ant is holding the mobile and it called the elephant which is holding paintbrush and so on…” you were now more efficient to remember it. This is how it works, many people unintentionally use it also without realizing it.
2. Law of Imagination
Why the things we see gets more easily remember rather than listening it? Imagination works as a booster to memorise a data, anything which you visually see gets more precisely associated to your brain rather than listening it or by use of other senses. There is biological reason of it, the nerves connecting your eyes to the brains are 20 times stronger than the nerves connecting it to the ears, so this is the main reason why things we see gets more easily remember than we whatever listen or feel. When you first attempted to remember that list you were only visualising the words but when Ant, Spiderman, Lakes, Dragon, Rainbow created a scene all together you felt more comfortable and ease to remember it.
- Law of Ridiculous thinking
Ever saw before, an ant holding a mobile? Or an Elephant painting a poster or a Spiderman siting on a tree? these things are ridiculous as hell one can laugh over it but that is why it is triggering more hard rather that any normal serious thought, The thing is your brain is full of clichés and it’s craving for more and more new things to see and explore, and this is how it can be helpful to use it in order to enhance your memory. When you associate any raw data with a ridiculous thinking it gets more interesting for brain to retain it forever and give a special place within it. So in a nutshell, when these three laws applied together to memorise any sort of information its gets so easy to remember that you yourself could get amazed to realise it.
That’s all, in my next blog you will see how you can memorise English vocabulary, History Dates, A series of long number, important points of speech and even a Binary series using these three basic laws of memory. Till then keep practicing more and more association and in this way you will be able to enhance your memory. Try to make more and more associations to learn any information collaborating it with imaginations of ridiculous thinking, Reason you know already. Thank you!
